Kemo Therapy
Kemotherapy or Chemotherapy?
Ok so I know that I misspelled Chemotherapy but I also know that I am not alone. A whole lot of people spell it Kemo Therapy. Even Google spells it both ways so I guess it really doesn’t matter. What does matter though is just what kemo therapy is.
Chemotherapy is a systemic therapy and it affects the body and its parts by traveling through the entire bloodstream. Its whole purpose is to eliminate the body of cancer cells that may have spread from their origin to other parts of the body.
Is chemotherapy effective? In a word…yes. The drugs used love to interfere with the cancer cells that are rapidly dividing. The side effects come about because the cancerous cells are not the only rapidly dividing cells in your body. There are many other cells that are going through division such as those that are in your blood, hair, nose, and vagina just to name a few. This means that chemotherapy will also interfere with those cells also. That is where the side effects come in.
However many advances have been made in kemo therapy over the last decade. This has made live a lot more tolerable for people taking the treatments. Just remember too that chemotherapy rarely affects organs in which the cells do not divide rapidly such as your liver or your kidneys.
Do not let fear enter your thought life when you hear about another person’s ordeal with chemotherapy and how horrible it was. The fact is that everyone’s regimen is different and so everyone’s experience will be different.
Also your doctor could suggest several chemotherapies and this is normal. He is just looking out for you and trying to promote the best treatment possible.
Kemo therapy does not have to be a nightmare. And different people have different side effects. Just keep a positive attitude instead of a negative one.
